English vocabulary: Genetics

Hello everyone!

I am on fire in 2024! Lol. I am here again to share with you my study to learn vocabulary, and the theme today is genetics.

As you know, to increase your vocabulary, you need to read. If there's a word you don't know, you can translate it into your native language. Another step is to listen to (e.g., a documentary, podcast, series...) the theme of the chosen vocabulary to learn the pronunciation and memorize the words.

I loved very much these classes. The teacher speaks a way easy English, pronouncing the words perfectly, thereby the listener can repeat them.

I wrote a text using some words from my vocabulary about genetics to help me remember:

GENETICS (250 Words)

Gregory Mendel was the one who managed to elucidate how the characteristics were transmitted of parents to the child. In 1865, the father of genetics achieved that feat at a moment when there was no knowledge about cell division and DNA structure.

In 1953, at Cavendish lab in England, Francis Crick and James Watson with help of Rosalind Franklin conclude the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) molecules have a your structure with two strands. The representation is a long molecule, with 2 strands intertwined around its axis.

The DNA is formed by nucleotides. Nucleotides are composed of a phosphate group, sugar and nitrogen base, and currently, we know that the DNA molecule has the power to store genetics information. The two strands of DNA are stabilized by hydrogen bonds between the bases attached to the two chains. The four nitrogen bases in the DNA are adenine (a), cytosine (c), guanine (g) e thymine (t).

The genetics is a field of biology that studies biological inheritance and its mechanisms. The genetic information of an organism is denominated genome, which is organized in the chromosomes.

The gene is a DNA segment. Humans have around of 30.000 genes and 46 chromosomes, this constitutes a long DNA sequence. The gene combinations are what differentiate the individuals. Through the study of genes, it is possible to identify the biological characteristics of each individual.

Furthermore, we need emphasize the relevance of this field for health and identifying people, either by to discovering and treating diseases or clarification/clarifying crimes. With the evolution of genetics many techniques and areas have emerged that are integrated into medicine, industry, agriculture and animal husbandry.

Until the next post. bye bye. 💪👋
